What Area of Nursing Has the Highest Demand?

There is a large demand for nurses all over the United States, but some types of nurses are in more demand than others. If you are a nursing student who is trying to decide on a specialty area, consider filling a need by becoming a neonatal nurse, an ICU nurse or a gerontologist nurse.

Neonatal Nurse

A neonatal nurse is a nurse who specializes in working with newborn children. Healthy newborns of today usually stay with their mothers until they’re ready to go home, so you may not have as many opportunities to work exclusively with healthy babies. As a neonatal nurse in the 21st century, you’ll get to work with children who are under a month old, however the babies you work with will usually either be premature or have some type of illness. Many neonatal nurses decide to work in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, also called the NICU. This is a little more challenging than working with infants who are just premature, but if you like a work environment that’s fast-paced, being a NICU nurse might be for you. Over 90 percent of all employees who work with newborns in intensive care units are nurses, so you shouldn’t have to worry about a shortage of jobs.

ICU Nurse

There is a big demand for intensive care unit (ICU) nurses in the United States of America. If you decide that you don’t want to work in a NICU, consider working in a regular intensive care unit. According to the Healthcare Traveler, there are more than half of a million critical care nurses in the United States, and that number is expected to increase in the future. To increase your chances of getting a job in an intensive care unit, consider getting certified from the American Association of Critical Care Nurses. You can choose to specialize in areas such as:

  • acute and critical care
  • cardiac medicine
  • cardiac surgery
  • nurse managing and leadership
  • progressive care nursing

Gerontologist Nurse

If you have an interest in working with the elderly, consider becoming a gerontological nurse. Gerontological nurses specialize in treating older people. Because of the aging baby boomer population, the demand for gerontological nurses is greater than ever before. You’ll need to earn you master’s degree and become certified through the American Nurses Credentialing Center of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners before you can be certified as a Gerontological Nurse Practitioner , but if working in elderly nursing is a passion of yours, all of that work will be worth it. Considering that the demand for nurses is supposed to increase by 26% by 2020, and that the demand for gerontologist nurses is expected to increase more than that, you won’t have to worry about finding a job if you choose this path.

There are many areas of nursing that are desperate for new workers, but some need people more than others. If you want to specialize in an area that has a high demand for nurses, consider working with newborns, in an intensive care unit or with the aging population.
